…Lauds its Problem-Solving Policy for flood victims
Kogi State Governor, His Excellency, Yahaya Bello has praised the policy thrust of the Hydroelectric Power Producing Areas Development Commission (HYPPADEC), aimed at addressing the recurring challenges of flooding whilst cushioning its effects by improving the living standards of residents of host communities in the State.
He spoke through his Deputy, His Excellency, Chief (Dr.) Edward Onoja, when he recieved members of the Commission, led by Chairman of Governing Council, Hon. Joseph Terfa Ityav at the Banquet Hall of the State Government House in Lokoja, on Tuesday.
Chief Onoja, on behalf of the Governor, welcomed the delegation and expressed gratitude to God for using President Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR, to expedite the actualization of the Commission and its mandate, hinting that, like member states of Niger, Kwara, Kebbi, Benue and Plateau, Kogi as the Confluence State, holds a significant position for its activities.
He condoled with families of slain students of Greenfield University, Kaduna and prayed God grants those in captivity freedom whilst thanking Him for the near zero insecurity in Kogi, praying states experiencing such get respite.
He emphasized the thoughts of the State Commissioner for Environment, Hon. Omofaiye Adewale in identifying flood-prone and flash-flood areas like Idah, Lokoja, Ibaji, Ajaokuta, Bassa, Ankpa, Adavi, Ijumu amongst others, describing the Commission’s intervention policy to assuage the ecological problems facing member states as timely.
He regretted that the natural disaster of flooding, aside other negative impacts, affects agricultural activities in the State and sued for a working collaboration with Government of Yahaya Bello whom he said has been steadfast in reducing the burden of affected communities through evacuation, rehabilitation and provision of relief/health materials.
The Deputy Governor expressed confidence in the pool of experienced individuals at the helm of the Commission to deliver on its mandate and wished the delegation a successful outing in the State.
Earlier, Chairman of Governing Council, Hon. Joseph Terfa, in a joint voice with Managing Director, Abubakar Sadiq Yelwa and Commissioner, Representing Kogi State at the Commission, Alh. Isa Ozi Salami, thanked Governor Bello for receiving it. They appreciated his admirable role in fostering its take-off this year as well as recommending Kogi State’s Alh. Isa Ozi Salami as Commissioner.
In attendance were Secretary to the State Government, State Head of Service, Deputy Chief of Staff, Commisoners for Environment, Transport, Culture and Tourism, Agriculture, Women Affairs, other government functionaries, relevant stakeholders and other guests.
